...A mountain top sunrise, a steaming cup of joe, a new beginning. There is something sacred about mornings, especially for athletes. We believe Rise & Run is the best first-thing fueling book ever compiled – Pesto Zucchini Superhero Muffins, Sweet Potato Biscuits, Goddess Grain-Free Granola, Breakfast Power Bowl, Raspberry Rival Smoothie, oh my! – with nourishing inspiration for anyone in training, whether that’s jogging two miles a day or powering through twenty. And, like everything else in the Run Fast. Eat Slow. family—nutrient-dense whole foods, healthy fat, listening to your body, avoiding restrictive diets—it’s meant to be a forever habit. We want this to be yet another cookbook that never leaves your counter.
Waking right isn’t a fad. It’s a way of life.
XOXO,
Shalane & Elyse

Behind the scenes of Rise & Run
The making Rise & Run looked a little different this time around. With the pandemic in full swing, we went from testing recipes side-by-side to testing remotely in our three kitchens. It seemed daunting at first, but we adapted quickly and got super organized with shared google docs, spreadsheets, and lots of text messages. Natalie (living in Portland at the time) would occasionally drop off some treats at Shalane's door for feedback. We had regular Zoom calls discussing recipes (and life!) while snacking on Superhero Muffins (a never ending supply!). The new cookbook features 24 all new Superhero Muffin recipes--we can't wait for you to try the savory, high-protein versions.
Later in the year, we were able to all safely get together in Bend and test recipes like old times. At the end of it all, 6 months of recipe testing and lots of Superhero Muffins later, we had over 100 full-proof recipes tested by Elyse, Natalie and Shalane and also by our amazing team of volunteer recipe testers (shoutout to runner Michael Weisberg who tested every single recipe). The entire cookbook writing, editing, photography, layouts/design, and printing process takes two years from conception to launch!
The Rise & Run cookbook is vegetarian-friendly!! 107 recipes in the book are vegetarian and 52 of those are vegan with 26 more that can be easily made vegan. Also the book gives plenty of substitutions for our gluten-free and dairy-free friends.
This book couldn't have happened without the support of our fans, recipe testers, photography team, and the amazing Run Fast Eat Slow editorial and marketing team at Penguin Random House. We hope you love Rise & Run as much as we do and that it helps bring more joy and ease to your mornings. It's our most beautiful and inspiring book to date.
Happy baking!
